Final words on breast feeding

Did you know it has been the law in Florida since February 1993 that women can breast feed in public? Check out House Bill 231 FL ALS 4. It says A mother may breast feed her baby in any location, public or private, where the mother is otherwise authorized to be, irrespective of whether or not the nipple of the mother’s breast is covered during or incidental to the breastfeeding. So mothers, whether you’re at the park, grocery store, church, work…BREASTFEED. Don’t let anyone tell you, you can not or make you feel uncomfortable. It’s your right.

We touched on benefits for the baby but there are benefits for the mother as well. Because I nursed my children I am at less risk for breast cancer, ovarian cancer and osteoporosis. Breast feeding benefits you and your baby. Everyone can help children get a healthy start by encouraging and supporting mothers-to-be to breast feed.

Some myths about breast feeding: It’s painful, You have to drink a lot; Small breasts don’t produce enough (sooo untrue !).
Extra benefits: No bottles to BUY, wash and store. No formulas to BUY, measure and mix. The milk is always ready and FREE. You can refrigerate for days, freeze for months. I could go on and on. Nothing is better for your baby. BREASTFEED and save some $$$.

The World Health Organization recommends mothers breastfeed EXCLUSIVELY for the first six months. Why? Because it decreases the baby’s risk of dying in the first year of life, of them becoming fat or developing type 1 diabetes. Breastfed babies are less likely to have ear infections, pneumonia, meningitis or diarrhea. Babies who are nursed are less likely to have allergies, eczema and asthma. I read research shows they are even smarter, having a higher IQ. An added bonus for those of us who have to change those diapers…diapers don’t stick as bad! Really. So don’t deprive your child of the opportunity of becoming a genius…BREASTFEED.
